At least once you happened to listen to worried friends, relatives or an ordinary person met on the street (maybe while lighting a cigarette) telling you that you have to quit vaping unless you want to find water in your lungs. Underlying this argument is the following logic: if you inhale vapor throughout the day, in the evening that steam will accumulate in the lungs, creating the famous “water in lungs”.
Below you will find an explanation of the absurdity of this statement and you can use it to prompt reply when you’ll experience this situation again.
1. First of all, “water in lungs” is a very vulgar way to indicate a couple of pathological conditions called pulmonary edema or pleural effusion, the consequences of which can be very serious.
2. The fog produced by the e-cig is not water vapor , but an aerosol mainly composed of airborne particles of glycol and glycerin.
3. E-liquids contain on average less than 10% of water, therefore a vaper consuming 20ml of e-liquid per day (let’s exaggerate) will inhale a maximum of 2ml of water. Not to mention that the assimilation is much lower than the 100%, meaning that a likely amount would be even lower that 0,5ml. Now, let’s also consider that 65% of the human body is made of water, that is to say that a 70kg man contains about 45 liters of water (45.000 ml) to which 0,5 ml of water should be added as result of the abuse of e-cig.
4.Lungs normally exchange water vapor with the air found in the alveoli to maintain the alveolar surfaces wet and to balance the water exchange. During a day, an average man loses about 400ml of water through breathing, even not practicing any particular physical activity.
Inhaling water vapour means introducing into lungs water in its gaseous state; it will be partially absorbed while partially it will be expelled though exhalation. The absorbed portion of water enters the bloodstream; should it be in excess, it will be then disposed by the kidney, the skin or by lungs.
If you understandably do not remember all these points, you can always answer this way: if the e-cig was really a risky factor causing water in lungs, then inhalers, SPA and wellness remedies would not be healthy but instruments of mass destruction!
